Community Stabilization Program Counselor

Major Responsibility:

The primary purpose of the Community Stabilization Program Counselor is to provide assessment and ongoing therapeutic services to consumers. The CSP Counselor is responsible for ensuring that services are meeting the needs of consumers and that services being provided are in accordance with professional practices and legal requirements.

Supervisory Controls:

The CSP Counselor works under the direct supervision of the Clinical Director and Program Manager/Director, who provides general instructions.  Work is assigned in terms of functional/organizational objectives. The supervisor will provide guidance with unusual situations that do not have clear precedents.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

1.    Knowledge of theories, principles, and practice related to Behavioral Health Counseling, Transitional Living Services, Community Stabilization Services, assessments, report writing, crisis intervention, and ethical issues in the practice of therapy/counseling

2.    Skill in providing diagnostic, prevention/therapeutic services to consumers

3.    Knowledge of psychotropic medications

4.    Knowledge of the psychological, social, and vocational effects of illness on individuals and their families, and the role of stressors in the exacerbation of illness

5.    Ability to maintain strict consumer and program confidentiality

6.    Ability to maintain necessary certification

7.    Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

8.    Ability to compile information to aid consumers in carrying out treatment objectives

9.    Ability to function positively in an environment of limited resources

10. Ability to relate well to and address the needs of a diverse group of people, including consumers, staff, and the public

11. Ability to safely and independently navigate among consumers in high traffic, unstructured environments

12. Ability to flex schedule as program needs change

Essential Functions:

  • Complete annual Mental Health Assessments and monitor clinical records for consumers to ensure the presence of all required documentation
  • Develop, review, and revise Individual Treatment Plans for consumers in a timely and clinically meaningful manner
  • Deliver individual and group services that foster recovery according to program requirements
  • Locate, develop, enhance modify, and/or supplement group curriculum to meet the needs of consumers
  • Facilitate consumer empowerment, and nurture consumers in acquiring self-advocacy and leadership skills
  • Complete all preparatory tasks required for the delivery of quality group services
  • Optimize the clients’ level of functioning and independence, by reinforcing and developing personal, social, and vocational competencies
  • Work in close conjunction with Case Managers and other staff to assure continuity and effectiveness of treatment
  • Participate in clinical staffing, treatment planning, review, and discharge planning
  • Network with other professionals, as needed to implement effective treatment
  • Follow clinical guidelines for best practices
  • Prepare reports and track consumer demographics and data according to program protocol
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new services, as needed
  • Keep supervisor informed of significant problems that jeopardized the achievement of objectives
  • Participate in accreditation and site reviews, as needed
  • Provide transportation as needed
  • Other related duties assigned

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Guidance, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Vocational Counseling, or Related Field is required
  • Sufficient combination of education and experience to be recognized as a Qualified Mental Health Professional as defined by the State of Illinois Department of Human Services guidelines is required
  • A minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience providing services to persons with mental illness is required
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team is strongly preferred
